Pope Francis adds 3 new invocations to the Litany of the Rosary

In response to an instruction from Pope Francis, the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments announced the modification of the Litany of Loreto, traditionally prayed at the end of the Holy Rosary, in order to add three new invocations to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

In a letter to the presidents of the episcopal conferences of the whole world, Cardinal Robert Sarah, Prefect of the Congregation, and his secretary, Archbishop Arthur Roche, point out that throughout the centuries, Christians have used innumerable invocations and titles to invoke the Virgin Mary, "as the privileged and sure way to an encounter with Christ.

"Discerning this sentiment and welcoming the desires expressed," the Congregation explains, "the Supreme Pontiff, Pope Francis, wishes to provide that, in the form of the Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary, known as: ´The Litany of Loreto´, these three new invocations be inserted

• Mater misericordiae (Mother of Mercy).
• Mater spei (Mother of Hope).
• Solacium migrantium (Comfort of Migrants).

According to the instructions given by the Vatican, instead of corresponding to each of the new invocations among the Litanies, they are the following:

• "Mother of Mercy" should be inserted after "Mother of the Church",
• "Mother of Hope" after "Mother of Divine Grace",
• "Comfort of Migrants" after "Refuge of Sinners".

"Countless are the titles and invocations that Christian piety, throughout the centuries, has reserved for the Virgin Mary, a privileged and safe path to the encounter with Christ," wrote Cardinal Robert Sarah and Archbishop Arhur Roche, Prefect and Secretary of the Vatican Dicastery, in the letter.

They further indicated that, "Even in the present time, which is marked by uncertainty and bewilderment, a devout recourse to her, full of affection and trust, is particularly felt by the people of God. Pope Francis has now added three more.

There are also other litanies such as the Litany of the Saints, the Litany of the Names of Jesus, the Litany of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Litany of St. Joseph (1909), the Litany of the Precious Blood and also the Litany of Divine Mercy.

Updated Litany of Loreto

This would be followed by the updated Litany of Loreto to be prayed at the end of the Holy Rosary, with the 3 new invocations added:
